Don’t Wear White!

In spirit of our reminder to our e-blast subscribers not to wear white (since labor day has passed), I wanted to share some marketing faux pas, which I would say are far more embarrassing (and costly) than a white jacket!

From Ahajokes.com, examples of translations in advertising gone awry:

Coors put its slogan, “Turn it loose,” into Spanish, where it was read as “Suffer from diarrhea.”

Clairol introduced the “Mist Stick,” a curling iron, into German only to find out that “mist” is slang for manure. Not too many people had use for the “manure stick”.

When Gerber started selling baby food in Africa, they used the same packaging as in the US, with the beautiful baby on the label. Later they learned that in Africa, companies routinely put pictures on the label of what’s inside, since most people can’t read English.

Pepsi’s “Come alive with the Pepsi Generation” translated into “Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the grave,” in Chinese.

When Parker Pen marketed a ballpoint pen in Mexico, its ads were supposed to say “It won’t leak in your pocket and embarrass you.” However, the company mistakenly thought the spanish word “embarazar” meant embarrass. Instead the ads said that “It wont leak in your pocket and make you pregnant.”

Also in Chinese, the Kentucky Fried Chicken slogan “finger-lickin’ good” came out as “eat your fingers off.”

When General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America, it was apparently unaware that “no va” means “it won’t go.” After the company figured out why it wasn’t selling any cars, it renamed the car in its Spanish markets to the Caribe.

Colgate introduced a toothpaste in France called Cue, the name of a notorious porno magazine.

Rock out, mellow out… whatever

Hey all,

A lot of us around the office listen to Pandora, LastFM, or iTunes Genius throughout the day. I think it would be fun to know what people in our office or any of our readers are listening to! Comment with your answers and check out what everyone else has to say.

Thanks!

Shopping locally is EASY with choices like these!

Easy options:

Get your groceries from Ralph’s/Bayview Thriftway, the Co-ops, or the Farmers Market.

Go shopping at Archibald Sisters, Childhoods End Gallery, Wind-up Here, or The Sofa Gallery.

Dine at the Farmer’s Market, Budd Bay Cafe, Oyster House, Sorrento Restaurant, Mercato, Riccardo’s, Lemon Grass, Quality Burrito, or Dockside Bistro

For fun try an outing to the Percival Landing area where you can enjoy the market. Frolic and cool off in the water fountain followed by a great sandwich from Traditions Cafe, then stroll along Percival Landing and end up at Bayview Thriftway for gelato and a 5-star view of the bay from their upstairs dining area. Look for wine tastings at The Wine Loft, Check out live entertainment at Harlequin Productions, Olympia Little Theatre, and The Washington Center. Attend Music in the Park, take a tour of the state capitol, visit the Hands-on Children’s Museum, or Olympic Flight Museum.

We have all sorts of specialties stores in the South Sound. Patronizing locally-owned businesses keeps the economy kicking.
(GCI is proud to use local vendors wherever possible!)

Golly Gee

Did everyone see the cute smart nerdy little money pig in the “g-whiz” e-blast we sent out today?? I think all of the lucky ducks who did would have to agree that it was super adorable.

GCI sends out great e-blast messages. If you’re not on the e-mail list and want to be (since it’s no fun feeling left out) then you should send an e-mail request to “the team” or use our contact form. Keep in mind, the e-blasts come with some awesome stuff that doesn’t show up in our blog or site and I don’t mean farm animals (though I am still crazy about that little piggy). No,we’re talking really helpful tips!

-Jenny

(P.S. If you need help getting your own e-blasts going we can help with that too.)

Consumption… sounds bad right?

This morning I was sitting at my computer working… or trying to. I was having a lot of trouble focusing. I mentioned to Paul that I was feeling “ADD”. This afternoon I thought about grabbing my 7th stick of gum for the day (I had almost a pack yesterday too)… needless to say, gum is a compulsive habit for me. (I actually gave it up among other things for Lent on year because I have such an awful habit of going through it so fast.) I decided to wait a little while before my next stick, and then I started admiring the packaging for the “5 gum” it’s nice, unique.

As I was looking over the details I noticed the warnings in mice type on the front. One was for Phenylketonurics. It said that the product contains phenylalanine. I looked at it for a moment and thought that sounded less than great, so I opted to Google the ingredient. Turns out Phenylalanine (which is 50% of aspartame) can trigger ADD/ADHD, emotional and behavioral disorders when you consume too much in your daily diet and that in high doses it can lead to cellular death in your brain. UGH! It contains sorbitol too, which I know makes my stomach feel awful… I guess my hope for this post is just to say, be conscious of what you consume… for some reason those kinds of products are acceptable to the FDA, so we have to be smart about what we choose to eat (and not be like me and over-consume bad things.) And if we choose to eat them despite what is in them, at least smaller amounts reduce side effects. I for one am done with those gums and whatever else I find it in.

Simplicity

I love the idea of selling an idea as simply as possible. This Volvo ad is a great example. The image piques the viewer’s interest and then the payoff is very clear with the logo. The tagline under it is simply an extra at that point to enhance the benefit. This works because Volvo has done such a great job, always positioning themselves clearly as one thing, ‘Safe,’ anything else they say falls second. Something to consider when deciding how much should go into messaging.

This ad for Volvo was produced in Japan, but it’s easy to understand anywhere.

Hard Rock – Rockin’ Interactive

I was checking out some other blogs and followed a trail from what I thought was a cool print ad for the Hard Rock Cafe to what is indisputably an awesome interactive website demoed here on the creating firm, Duncan Channon’s youtube channel. Prepare to drop your jaw at how much work went into this thing, it’s truly incredible.

Developing a product?

There are so many things that go into product development and by the end, it comes down to the packaging and the launch. We can help with that for sure. But I found a Case Study about Mercedes Benz a while back that I thought it was really useful. They used direct mail and the customer response as part of their product development and by the end the people that had been giving the feedback to help develop the vehicle felt so involved… such a sense of ownership that they were very keen to take advantage of the pre-sale offer that Mercedes offered them. I think it would be truly thrilling to help one of our clients with this kind of project. The design and branding opportunities to make the company shine and make the product and final sale a success seem endless.

For full info on the Mercedes-Benz case study go here: http://www.brandingasia.com/cases/mercedes-case.htm
