She’s Boss

Our boss, Connie Lovelady was the recipient of the 2009 Women of Influence award by the South Sound Business Examiner which recognizes achievement in business and community service. On Sept. 29th we all went to an Academy-Awards caliber celebration where we watched Connie, along with seven other remarkable women, walk the red carpet of recognition. And it’s high time too. Here’s an abbreviated list of Connie’s accomplishments:

• In 1987 Connie was one of the first women sponsored into Rotary International. Connie actively serves on numerous Rotary committees, has served as a Board Member and in 2007– 2008 was awarded the C. Dale Ferrier Vocational Service Award , for Outstanding Professional Achievement and Dedication to the Principle of Service and Community Leadership.

• Connie has served for 20 years as the chair of the Lacey Rotary Annual Community Improvement Awards, which honors businesses and service organizations that have contributed to helping make the community a better place to live.

• Over a 16 year history, Connie actively participated on the Lakefair Committee, acting as a float judge, a princess judge as well a designer of the annual Lakefair themed logos.

• As a Member of Thurston County Chamber for more than 18 years, she has served as a past member of the Board of Directors, and donated her services to design the current Chamber logo.

• As the recipient of numerous awards for design excellence, over the last 30 years, GCI has earned the reputation as one of the most respected design and advertising agencies in the Puget Sound area.

• GCI’s memberships include: Thurston County Chamber of Commerce, Olympia Master Builders, Association of Washington Businesses, Thurston County Economic Development Council, Women’s Business Exchange, and Lacey Rotary.

Rock out, mellow out… whatever

Hey all,

A lot of us around the office listen to Pandora, LastFM, or iTunes Genius throughout the day. I think it would be fun to know what people in our office or any of our readers are listening to! Comment with your answers and check out what everyone else has to say.

Thanks!

Jenny

Consumption… sounds bad right?

This morning I was sitting at my computer working… or trying to. I was having a lot of trouble focusing. I mentioned to Paul that I was feeling “ADD”. This afternoon I thought about grabbing my 7th stick of gum for the day (I had almost a pack yesterday too)… needless to say, gum is a compulsive habit for me. (I actually gave it up among other things for Lent on year because I have such an awful habit of going through it so fast.) I decided to wait a little while before my next stick, and then I started admiring the packaging for the “5 gum” it’s nice, unique.

As I was looking over the details I noticed the warnings in mice type on the front. One was for Phenylketonurics. It said that the product contains phenylalanine. I looked at it for a moment and thought that sounded less than great, so I opted to Google the ingredient. Turns out Phenylalanine (which is 50% of aspartame) can trigger ADD/ADHD, emotional and behavioral disorders when you consume too much in your daily diet and that in high doses it can lead to cellular death in your brain. UGH! It contains sorbitol too, which I know makes my stomach feel awful… I guess my hope for this post is just to say, be conscious of what you consume… for some reason those kinds of products are acceptable to the FDA, so we have to be smart about what we choose to eat (and not be like me and over-consume bad things.) And if we choose to eat them despite what is in them, at least smaller amounts reduce side effects. I for one am done with those gums and whatever else I find it in.

foiled! and other April foolery…

ok, so it’s been done. we’ve all probably seen the aluminum foil cubicle before. But it’s always fun to revive the classics.

foiled foiled! and other April foolery...

Jenny, enjoying a little musiiic frooom spaaace!

But how about some of them internet jokes? Well, Youtube literally turned upside down for the day.

Google, unsurprisingly, gave birth to a sentient artificial intelligence… but CADIE’s seems to be obsessed with pandas. Hmm…

Ahh, April fools, how ever-so-much fun!

FreeRice.com

This morning I found my 10 year old son, Cameron, eating his Cheerios in front of a laptop. I’m usually a little sensitive about my kids eating around the laptop, especially when milk is involved, but I was shocked to see him playing a math multiplication game. I asked him what he was doing and he told me, as he pointed to a rice bowl on the screen, that he was helping feed people who are hungry. Intrigued, I sat down and watched him for a couple minutes. Every time he got a question right a little more rice was added to the bowl. FreeRice.com was the website he was on. I did some research after he left for school. For every right answer, FreeRice.com donates 10 grains of rice through the UN World Food Program. It doesn’t sound like much but just yesterday alone they donated 71,701,720 grains of rice, enough to feed almost 4,000 people a full days supply of food. The ironic thing is that I’ve tried getting Cameron interested in on-line math games that blow up aliens or sink pirate ships and he’s never been interested. Here’s a video that explains how it works.

Simplicity

I love the idea of selling an idea as simply as possible. This Volvo ad is a great example. The image piques the viewer’s interest and then the payoff is very clear with the logo. The tagline under it is simply an extra at that point to enhance the benefit. This works because Volvo has done such a great job, always positioning themselves clearly as one thing, ‘Safe,’ anything else they say falls second. Something to consider when deciding how much should go into messaging.

This ad for Volvo was produced in Japan, but it’s easy to understand anywhere.

Developing a product?

There are so many things that go into product development and by the end, it comes down to the packaging and the launch. We can help with that for sure. But I found a Case Study about Mercedes Benz a while back that I thought it was really useful. They used direct mail and the customer response as part of their product development and by the end the people that had been giving the feedback to help develop the vehicle felt so involved… such a sense of ownership that they were very keen to take advantage of the pre-sale offer that Mercedes offered them. I think it would be truly thrilling to help one of our clients with this kind of project. The design and branding opportunities to make the company shine and make the product and final sale a success seem endless.
